A 2025 investigation by Toxic-Free Future tested clothing and home textiles marketed as stain- or water-resistant and found PFAS in 72% of the items tested, including some already banned from sale in the EU. That doesn't mean all outerwear is contaminated, but "water-resistant" and "stain-proof" labels are a reasonable place to slow down and check.

How much microplastic pollution comes from just doing laundry?

Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic are essentially woven plastic. Every wash cycle sheds tiny fibers that are too small for most washing machine filters or municipal water treatment plants to fully capture. Estimates vary by garment and wash conditions, but researchers have measured up to several hundred thousand microfibers released from a single synthetic garment in one wash, and these fibers have since turned up in ocean sediment, drinking water, and, in emerging research, human blood and lung tissue.

Textile laundering is now estimated to be responsible for a significant share of the roughly half a million tons of microfiber pollution entering the ocean each year, according to figures compiled by Earth.Org. That pollution doesn't come from any one brand. It comes from the sheer volume of synthetic clothing in circulation and how often it gets washed.

What's the broader environmental toll?

Beyond microfibers, fast fashion's environmental footprint is large mostly because of volume and speed. The industry is estimated to use around 141 billion cubic meters of water a year, and textile dyeing and finishing alone account for roughly 20% of global industrial wastewater, according to a review published in the journal Water. In the US, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste is landfilled annually, much of it clothing worn only a handful of times before being discarded.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office has also flagged fast fashion's labor and supply chain opacity as a related problem: garments priced to be disposable are often manufactured under conditions that are hard for consumers to verify at all.

How can you tell if a garment is actually cleaner?

Two certifications show up most often, and they answer different questions.

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished product for a defined list of harmful substances. It answers "is this safe to wear against my skin?" but says nothing about how the fabric was grown or how workers were treated. Conventional cotton or polyester can pass.
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) requires organically grown fiber and regulates chemical inputs, wastewater treatment, and labor conditions across the entire supply chain. It's a stricter, broader standard, but it also applies only to natural fibers, not synthetics.

Neither label guarantees a garment is microplastic-free if it's blended with synthetic fiber, and neither is a substitute for just buying less and wearing things longer, which remains the single biggest lever on both the health and environmental side.

What are some practical swaps?

  • Choose natural, untreated fibers (organic cotton, linen, wool) for anything worn against skin for long periods, especially baby and kids' clothing.
  • Skip "stain-resistant" or "water-repellent" labels on everyday clothing unless the brand explicitly states it's PFAS-free.
  • Wash synthetic clothing less often, in cold water, and consider a microfiber-catching laundry bag or filter.
  • Favor fewer, better-made pieces over frequent low-cost hauls. Longevity is doing most of the environmental work here.

Is all synthetic clothing bad for you?

Is organic cotton automatically safer than conventional cotton?
