What actually makes a kitchen "non-toxic"?
Four categories account for most of the real exposure risk in a typical kitchen: cookware coatings, plastic that touches hot or fatty food, cleaning product chemicals, and food packaging. Everything else, wood cutting boards, stainless utensils, glass jars, is essentially a non-issue.
On cookware, the chemical that drove most of the original nonstick health scare, PFOA, was voluntarily phased out by major US manufacturers under an EPA stewardship program completed in 2015, and Teflon-brand coatings have been PFOA-free since 2013, according to the EPA's own fact sheet on the program. What's proven versus overstated?

Other fears are overstated relative to the evidence. Modern PTFE nonstick cookware, used at normal stovetop temperatures, is considered safe by the FDA and most food safety researchers; the PFOA scare was about a manufacturing chemical that's already gone from US-made cookware, not the PTFE coating itself. Silicone bakeware and utensils are also broadly considered safe: the FDA regulates food-contact silicone rubber under 21 CFR 177.2600, and a 2020 review in Food Additives & Contaminants found minimal migration of silicone compounds into food under normal use.
Where should you start?
- Stop microwaving in plastic. Move leftovers to a glass or ceramic dish before reheating. This is the single highest-leverage swap based on the available research.
- Retire scratched nonstick pans. Once the coating is visibly damaged, replace it with a new nonstick pan, or move to stainless or cast iron for high-heat cooking.
- Switch to fragrance-free cleaning products, or DIY basics like vinegar and baking soda for routine cleaning, per EWG's testing on VOC emissions from scented cleaners.
- Use up what you have for lower-priority items like plastic storage containers used only for cold food. Replace with glass or stainless as they wear out.
