Plastic-Free Food Storage: What Actually Works for Everyday Use
Plastic containers are convenient because they're light and don't shatter. The tradeoff is that they shed microplastic particles into food, and that shedding increases sharply with heat. Here's what the research says and what to actually switch to.
Glass and stainless steel are the two materials with the least evidence of shedding into food, especially when heated. Food-grade silicone is a reasonable middle option for flexible items like bags and lids. The single biggest risk factor across all plastic is microwaving it, not just owning it.
How much microplastic actually comes from plastic food containers?
A 2023 study published in Environmental Science & Technology tested how plastic containers and reusable pouches shed particles under different conditions. Microwave heating produced dramatically more shedding than refrigeration or room-temperature storage. Under microwave conditions, some containers released as many as 2.11 billion nanoplastic particles and 4.22 million microplastic particles from just one square centimeter of container surface in three minutes, far more than cold storage of the same container.
A separate 2025 study covered by CNN found microplastics in effectively all of 155 common beverages tested, with hot drinks in plastic-lined or plastic-adjacent packaging shedding more than cold ones. Is silicone actually safe, or is it just "less plastic"?

Unlike plastic, silicone isn't built from long polymer chains that shed as microplastic fragments in the same way. Do stainless steel containers work for everything?
Mostly, with a couple of practical tradeoffs. The two limitations are that it's opaque, so you can't glance inside to check what's in it, and it isn't microwave safe, since metal in a microwave can spark and damage the appliance. For lunches you plan to eat cold or reheat by transferring to a separate dish, stainless steel is one of the most durable options available. For anything you want to reheat directly in its container, glass is the more practical choice.
Bento-style stainless steel containers with silicone gaskets are worth a specific mention, since the gasket is usually what makes the difference between a container that's actually leak-proof and one that just seems airtight. Check that the gasket is removable and washable, since food residue trapped under a fixed seal is a common complaint with lower-quality versions.
What about beeswax wraps and parchment as plastic wrap alternatives?
For covering bowls or wrapping produce, beeswax wraps and unbleached parchment paper are solid plastic-free options for short-term, room-temperature or fridge use. Neither is a substitute for an airtight container for anything you're storing more than a day or two, and beeswax wraps shouldn't touch raw meat or go in the microwave.
What's the actual priority order for switching?
- Stop microwaving in plastic first. This is where the shedding data is strongest. Transfer food to glass or ceramic before reheating, even if the container stays plastic for storage.
- Replace containers you use for hot or fatty leftovers (soups, sauces, anything reheated often) with glass or stainless steel.
